To be honest, the idea of converting a “bar and grill”-type establishment into being a combination of an upscale mixed drinks bar and also a cat cafe was a rather marvelous piece of marketing on the part of Margaret, owner of the Cat’s Tail tavern in Mondstadt.

And, at the center of it all, you have Diona – the Katzlein lineage young woman who, thanks to her vision, can’t mix a drink that actually tastes bad. (although, heavens knows she’s constantly trying to)

She’s no slouch in battle, either. Diona’s an excellent supporting shielder and healer mix in combat, and finds a welcome home in many team compositions for Cryo Resonance feeding into a core damage dealer, or Superconduct/Freeze team compositions due to her dynamic Cryo elemental damage.

In this guide, we’ll go over Diona’s abilities, and what she naturally excels at supplying to your team compositions.

High-Level Overview

  • Diona is the only character in the game besides Noelle (as of Patch 1.5) who combines both shields and healing in her default kit, and finds welcome use in many squads that require both purposes.
  • Her Elemental Mastery increase at Constellation 6 offers roughly a 40% increase to Vaporize/Melt damage, and a 100% increase to Superconduct/Shattered/Swirl damage – making her an extremely viable setup for dynamic elemental damage into powerful combos.

  • Her Elemental Burst’s healing capacity trades off uptime ability for an 80 Energy-cost Burst against not having the capacity to fully heal most character’s HP pools until her Burst Talent Level is at 7.
  • Highest natural DEF for a 4-star rarity Archer is traded off against the lowest natural ATK stat of a 4-star Archer (even lower than Amber’s).
  • The Sacrificial Bow is arguably necessary in many builds for Diona to counterbalance uptime on her Elemental Burst vs. the natural 15s cooldown on her fully-charged Elemental Skill. Timings are a consideration with her, but are outweighed by kit viability once addressed.

  • Her Elemental Skill is extremely lackluster in the mid-to-late game unless fully charged, as a low-to-mid power shield with a <5 second uptime isn’t otherwise incredibly useful in most combat situations.
  • Her Normal and Charged Attacks have the lowest percentage increase per Talent Level of any Archer in the game, leaving very little natural momentum for a “DPS Diona” build to work off of.

Combat Disposition

Our analysis on Diona showed that the role she is most naturally geared towards is a support character, providing shields, healing, and general buff/debuff. This conclusion was reached by considering the following points:

  1. Her Elemental Skill provides shielding for her and her team.
  2. Her Elemental Burst provides AoE healing ability.
  3. Her 1st Ascension passive ability gives her Elemental Skill the ability to buff allies Movement SPD and Stamina consumption.
  4. Her 4th Ascension passive ability gives her Elemental Burst the ability to decrease opponents’ ATK.
  5. Constellation 1 gives her better uptime on her Elemental Burst.
  6. Constellation 2 notedly increases the shield absorption of her Elemental Skill.
  7. Constellation 6 significantly increases the healing ability of her Elemental Burst, and gives it the ability to increase allies’ Elemental Mastery by 200 temporarily.

While it’s not our aim to discourage build diversity in putting Diona into nonstandard roles, the only true offensive mechanisms she has going for her are her Ascension Passive increase being Cryo DMG % bonus, her Constellation 4 giving her reduced Charged Attack time, and Constellation 6’s EM buff. The minimal momentum she has towards DPS roles make them feel very awkward when built towards on her, and are beyond the scope of this kit guide to advise on – our aim here is to simply identify what the character is naturally geared towards.

Support Diona generally benefits heavily from HP-stat artifacts for the entirety of her kit, and Energy Recharge or Elemental Mastery weapons tend to complement this artifact kit well when used in tandem. The alternative approach, the dynamic Cryo DMG build, incorporates heavy application of Elemental Mastery, Energy Recharge, and ATK.

Core mechanics that Diona can be built around include:

  1. Shielding builds, using weapons such as the Sacrificial Bow or the Favonius Warbow, and artifact set bonuses such as the Tenacity of the Millelith or the Retracing Bolide.
  2. Healing builds, using weapons such as the Sacrificial Bow or the Favonius Warbow, and artifact set bonuses such as The Exile or the Maiden’s Beloved.
  3. Dynamic Cryo damage builds, using weapons such as the Windblume Ode or the Stringless, and artifact set bonuses such as the Blizzard Strayer or Noblesse Oblige.

Diona’s only real struggle is that since she’s combining two separate dominant support functions into a single character (healing and shields), her ability at handling each one individually is less optimized than the ability of other characters dedicated to one specific task of the two. To be fair, Noelle faces the same shortcoming. Team compositions that would normally tend to rely on one of two support mechanics beyond Diona’s ability to provide it require adjustments to be made to help round out the squad’s combat potential. For what she provides, in the format she provides it in, though, she does pretty darn well.

Our Personal Take

As expected, introducing a 12-year-old, tsundere catgirl character into Genshin Impact has received overwhelming positive feedback from the general playbase, and our community is no exception to this, either.

Diona’s Hangout Event, introduced in Patch 1.5, further fostered the kinship that many players have towards the short, quippy bartender of the Cat’s Tail. Her overall backstory is an interesting dichotomy to add into the mix; a character who ultimately wants to stop her father’s alcoholic habits… by working as a bartender and making amazing drinks.

Ah, well. Loli logic, folks – it doesn’t have to make sense to be entertaining, but maybe that’s the whole point?

From her personality on over to her playstyle, Diona serves as an excellent complement to a wide variety of team builds, and is an extremely worthwhile pull for anyone looking towards an array of general-purpose activities in Genshin Impact. Maybe in a future patch we’ll actually be able to go into the Cat’s Tail tavern and enjoy some of the atmosphere of her work environment?

It’s our hope that this guide has been helpful for you, and you’ve found it insightful for your playstyle and general approach to the game.
