Jean Gunnhildr brings one of the largest arrays of tools to team compositions in the entirety of Genshin Impact.

Her internal conflict between gravitating towards the title of the ‘Lionfang Knight’ or the ‘Dandelion Knight’ becomes more understandable once she’s placed into a combat scenario. Damage? She has plenty. Buff and debuff? She has that, too. Her lockdown and position manipulation kit is excellent as well, and healing ability rounds the equation off nicely.

In this guide, we’ll explore Jean’s skillset, what she excels at most, and what she’s best suited for in a party.

High-Level Overview


  • She’s one of the few characters in Genshin Impact that can actually fill every single role, per our breakdown of the Character Roles.
  • Her Elemental Skill offers the most readily-accessible control mechanic in the game, and is easily used to instantly KO enemies when near deep water or tall heights.
  • High damage scaling off of her abilities, which is unusual for a character with Utility traits.
  • One of the highest natural HP stats in the game. Very survivable.


  • Her Elemental Burst energy cost is 80, which is average among characters with Healing-oriented bursts.
  • Her Elemental Skill cannot lift enemies more than 20 levels higher than her – meaning her farm has to be on the plateau of what you’re fighting against for her kit to be fully viable.


  • Jean naturally has a low ATK stat (barely above Venti’s), and when this is combined with the mechanic of her Elemental Burst scaling off of her ATK, means that she requires more farm in this area to round her ability out.
  • Similarly, her 1st Ascension passive also scales off of her ATK stat, which falls prey to the same issue as the aforementioned point.

Combat Disposition

Our analysis on Jean showed that while she is an excellent damage dealer and should still be partially used in this format, the roles she is most naturally geared towards are healing, in multiple formats, and for LCP (Lockdown / Control / Positioning). This conclusion was reached by considering the following points:

  1. Her Ascension bonus attribute is Healing %.
  2. Her 1st Ascension passive ability increases her Healing potential.
  3. Her 4th Ascension passive ability gives her 20% Energy back upon using of her Burst, which is focused on Healing.
  4. Constellation 1 increases the LCP capabilities of her Elemental Skill.
  5. Constellation 2 aids the positioning aspect of her entire team.
  6. Her Elemental Skill’s primary uses are Damage and LCP.
  7. Her Elemental Burst’s primary use is Healing.

While Jean doesn’t technically perform any overall functions poorly, the one attribute she doesn’t get enough of by default that supplements too much of her kit to ignore is ATK. Having a high ATK is strongly recommended, as all her healing scales off of it, and her abilities also notedly scale hard off of it. Energy Recharge is also useful for assuring a high uptime on her Elemental Burst, but is not as essential as ATK. CRIT Rate and CRIT DMG can also be nice-to-haves. Elemental Mastery is much more situational for Jean, as she can’t invest hard into EM without losing heavy amounts of ATK and kit potential.

Core mechanics that Jean can be built around include:

  1. Healing builds, using weapons such as the Favonius Sword or Aquila Favonia, and artifact set bonuses such as the Maiden’s Beloved or the Gladiator’s Finale. (to boost her ATK stat)
  2. LCP & Utility builds, using weapons such as the Dark Iron Sword, Skyrider Sword or Festering Desire, and artifact set bonuses such as the Noblesse Oblige or the Wanderer’s Troupe.
  3. Anemo DMG builds, using weapons such as the Iron Sting or the Alley Flash, and artifact set bonuses such as the Viridescent Venerer or the Gambler.
  4. Physical DMG Builds, using weapons such as the Flute, the Prototype Rancor or the Royal Longsword, and artifact set bonuses such as the Bloodstained Chivalry or Berserker.

In terms of what Jean naturally struggles with, she has next to no natural weaknesses. Some level of argument can be made that she’s at a bit of an Energy usage disparity in terms of uptime on her Elemental Burst, but this can almost always be compensated for by having Energy Recharge as a secondary stat on her artifact kit. In terms of artifacts, RNG is in your favor in terms of bagging ATK-stat artifacts, and Jean can readily work with ATK artifacts and be very viable while a more fine-tuned kit is being farmed towards (if desired).

Our Personal Take

There are virtually no squad compositions that Jean is inherently bad in. She provides such a wide range of team support that she’s valued in nearly every team, at nearly every level – and is a regular contender in higher levels of the Spiral Abyss.

It’s somewhat ironic, then, that many players first pull Jean as a sort of “unhappy accident” in their limited event banner pulls while aiming for someone else. “Oh, shoot – I got Jean!” often turns into “Well, at least I got Jean.” after a few minutes of careful reflection.

Jean enjoys a happy following among the player community, as is evidenced not only by her use in gameplay, but also by the untold number of fan-fiction tales crafted to tell of a deeper story between the Acting Grand Master of the Knights of Favonius and a certain winery owner who moonlights as Mondstadt’s Vigilante against evil’s onslaught.
