Remember that time when you were formally taught how to craft bombs when you were in Grade School? No? You sure? Well, what kind of education did you end up receiving, then?!

Klee, the Spark Knight – the youngest member of the Knights of Favonius, and a regular patron of their solitary confinement room. She was left in their care by Alice, her mother, before she went on an adventure on the other side of Teyvat some time ago, and is yet to return. In the interim, festivities will no doubt ensue.

Apart from the obvious “Battle Loli” aspect of Klee, she packs an amazing punch in her combat kit as well as in her world exploration passive ability. Her kit is also fairly unique among Genshin’s characters as of Patch 1.5, making her more of a niche fit to some teams, but an extremely useful damage dealer once you’ve found a fit.

In this guide, we’ll walk through Klee, and what she can provide to your play. We’ll also briefly touch on what she doesn’t provide, since her kit is slanted in a direction that few others are.

High-Level Overview

  • All of her attacks and abilities not only count as heavy damage (the same as that of Claymores), but also count as explosions. In other words, she can stagger, launch, and ragdoll off the entirety of her kit, assuming that she’s dealt enough Interrupt Damage to do so.
  • She possesses the highest ATK stat of any Catalyst user currently in the game (as of Patch 1.5).

  • She trades off the highest percentage attack scaling of any Catalyst user currently in the game vs. having an extremely limited range on it.

  • Because of her short profile, she only has 80% of the normal movement speed of a medium-height female character. Combining this with her limited attack range, she can have mobility issues in some squads.
  • Her Elemental Burst is not dynamic damage. In other words, its effect stops if Klee is no longer the active character in the party.

Combat Disposition

Our analysis on Klee showed that the role she is most naturally geared towards is a damage dealer, with static or dynamic Pyro elemental damage. This conclusion was reached by considering the following points:

  1. Her Ascension bonus attribute is Pyro DMG % bonus.
  2. Her 1st Ascension passive ability increases her Elemental Skills damage potential and lowers stamina cost.
  3. Her 4th Ascension passive ability supplies the entire party with Energy upon CRIT of her Charged attack, giving her greater burst uptime.
  4. Constellations 1, 2, and 6 all fuel her offensive abilities with Pyro DMG specifically.
  5. Her Elemental Skill is capable of dealing dynamic AoE Pyro DMG.
  6. Her Elemental Burst deals 10s of static AoE Pyro DMG.

The normal rules with a Pyro core damage dealer apply to Klee – steer towards a combination of ATK, CRIT Rate, and CRIT DMG where possible. Combining Klee with a dynamic Hydro/Cryo elemental damage character for easy access to Vaporize/Melt reactions is an easy way to increase damage output. If Klee is to be used in a supplemental damage role, shift gears towards Energy Recharge and Elemental Mastery, but also give thought to pairing her with a dynamic elemental damage dealing character due to the static nature of her Elemental Burst.

Core mechanics that Klee can be built around include:

  1. Core Pyro DMG builds, using weapons such as the Solar Pearl or the Widsith, and artifact set bonuses such as the Crimson Witch of Flames or the Lavawalker.
  2. Sub Pyro DMG builds, using weapons such as the Mappa Mare or Sacrificial Fragments, and artifact set bonuses such as the Gambler or Wanderer’s Troupe.

Klee’s kit can be extremely clutch due to the combined nature of what it provides; no other character in Genshin Impact creates explosions off of their attacks. Ningguang is the only other Catalyst/Bow user who deals heavy-class damage on her attacks. In addition, Klee generates AoE damage off of her entire kit, with fairly high percentage stats to boot. The downside is that due to her reduced move speed and attack range, she has to get fairly “up in the face” of her opponents to unload her kit, and like most Catalyst users in Genshin, her natural DEF sits about ~150 below that of contact weapon fighting characters (Sword, etc.). Shields, healing, or simply extremely good dodging can help to overcome this hurdle.

Our Personal Take

Klee’s banner, although being one of the oldest banners in Genshin at this point, still remains the most-rolled-on banner in history of the game. She has a tremendous fan following, many of whom find her to be absolutely beyond endearing.

In the author’s opinion, Klee’s backstory is somewhat humorous when illustrated in the context of a video game, but extremely saddening when perceived in the real world. A child who’s largely abandoned by at least one of their parents, doesn’t get a holistic education, grows up in a partially-broken or fully-broken home, and then decides to pass the time by dabbling in acts of violence from time to time. It’s ironic that one of the most-loved characters in all of Genshin is actually a mirrored portrayal of one of the most deep-running and traumatic problems Western society faces here in the 21st Century.

And this isn’t a case of me trying to be a tryhard “woke” observer, here. Perhaps I’m just hardwired as a person to see a child misbehaving around me, and immediately ask: “Where are your parents? Why are your parents allowing their child to act this way?”

Semantics aside, Klee finds welcoming use in the current iteration of Spiral Abyss Floors 9 & 10 due to her Pyro DMG kit, as well as in Mondstadt’s exploration due to her utility passive skill. She also carries the role of one of the most delightfully entertaining cutscene and official video characters for the game as a whole.

We’re pretty glad she’s in the game, and the majority of the playerbase would no doubt agree. So…

Blasted fish, anyone?
